Ελεύθερος ο συναγωνιστής Varg!
Burzum frontman Varg Vikernes and his wife Marie Cachet have been released from jail in France.
The couple were arrested on suspicion of "plotting a massacre" earlier this week. Norway's NRK reports that the couple were released at 7pm local time yesterday (July 18). The same report states that Varg will return to court in the near future over a breach of French racism laws, which self-confessed Neo-Nazi sympathiser Vikernes is accused of violating on his blog.
The singer in the black metal group was arrested on July 16 at his farm in Salon-La Tour in central France, where he lives with his wife and three children. Authorities reportedly grew suspicious when Varg's wife purchased four firearms, with a permit. The arrest was made by the French government's Central Directorate of Internal Intelligence, which revealed to the media that it suspected Vikernes of "plotting a massacre".
A Reuters report adds that police were alerted to the singer's activity after he revealed that Norwegian mass killer Anders Behring Breivik sent a copy of a manifesto setting out his ideology to Vikernes. "That was at the origin of the investigation... There were several suspicions that made the services fear he could possibly carry out a violent act," a police spokesperson said.
Vikernes, a self-confessed Neo-Nazi sympathiser, has previously spent 21 years in prison in Norway for the murder of Řystein Aarseth, known as Euronymous, guitarist of black metal band Mayhem.
Vikernes was released in 2009 but was convicted of four counts of arson on churches in the same year.
