Ben Carson Just Threatened To Leave Repub Party Over 1 Thing That Would ‘Destroy’ GOP

From the beginning, Ben Carson has made it clear that his campaign for the Republican presidential nomination is based on his principles. If the Republican Party tries to violate those principles by staging a brokered convention, Carson said Friday he will walk away from the GOP.

On Thursday, the Washington Post reported that senior Republican officials met privately on Monday and discussed a brokered convention as a means to prevent front-runner Donald Trump from claiming the nomination, regardless of how well Trump does in the upcoming primaries. A brokered convention takes place when no candidate wins on the first ballot. Candidates then seek to gain enough delegates from other candidates to win the nomination.

“If the leaders of the Republican Party want to destroy the party, they should continue to hold meetings like the one described in the Washington Post this morning,” Carson said in a statement Friday.

“If this was the beginning of a plan to subvert the will of the voters and replace it with the will of the political elite, I assure you Donald Trump will not be the only one leaving the party,” he continued.

“I pray that the report in the Post this morning was incorrect,” he said in the statement. “If it is correct, every voter who is standing for change must know they are being betrayed. I won’t stand for it.”

“If the powerful try to manipulate it, the Republican National Convention in Cleveland next summer may be the last convention,” he continued. “I am prepared to lose fair and square, as I am sure is Donald. But I will not sit by and watch a theft.”

Sean Spicer, RNC chief strategist and communications director, tried to calm the waters on Friday.

“I say to Dr. Carson, ‘Don’t worry, your prayers have been answered,'” Spicer said. “it was a dinner where the subject was how the delegate selection process works. … At the end of that dinner, there were a lot of questions asked.”

Trump has said he is developing a strategy to plan for a brokered convention and also hinted at running as an independent.
