From the 25-2-1939 edition of Volkischer Beobachter

Over the last four months, the Polish Government has gone to great lengths to poison German-Polish relations. They have again and again organized hooligans to create incidents and commit outrages against German nationals and German diplomatic missions.

Only seven days after the February 3 attack on the German Embassy in Warsaw, acts of violence took place against the German Consulate and German nationals in Lodz. Thus, in disregard of the German Government’s repeated protests and demands, the Polish Government again has not kept its promise to prevent the occurrence of similar incidents.

On February 10, hundreds of hooligans made a wild attack on the German Consulate in Lodz. They stoned the Consulate building, breaking many windows. While the rowdies shouted anti-German slogans outside, some climbed over the walls and carried out provocations. In the afternoon, they damaged shops and houses of German nationals.

Two days later, the hooligans were out again, doing serious damage to German shops and houses and the local Protestant church. That same day, while von Berchem, the German Consul in Lodz, was conferring with the Governor of Pommern, hoodlums inscribed anti-German slogans on his car. All this occurred after the German Consul had called on the Governor of Pommern on February 9, demanding that the Polish authorities take effective measures to guarantee the safety of the Consulate and protect the life and property of German nationals. The German Embassy in Poland, in its February 15 note to the Polish Foreign Ministry, lodged the strongest protest with the Polish Government. It demanded that the Polish Government make a public apology for the incidents, punish the culprits and their instigators, compensate the Consulate and the German nationals for their losses, and take measures to guarantee against the occurrence of similar incidents in the future.
